What's on in whitchurch
Whitchurch Heritage & Tourist Information Centre
April 14th sees the start of a major exhibition of Sir Edward German
memorabilia at the Heritage Centre which runs until May 12th. This has
been arranged to coincide with the first ever Music Festival dedicated
to the life and work of composer Sir Edward German who was born in Whitchurch
in 1862. The Festival runs from April 22nd to 28th and all the tickets
for the extensive programme can be obtained from the Heritage Centre.
Plans are well under way for the next Exhibition too in June/July which
will be dedicated to Victorian Illustrator Randolph Caldecott who lived
and worked in the Town and used Whitchurch for inspiration in many of
his pictures.
In the latter half of August the Whitchurch Waterway Trust will be staging
an exhibition at the Centre to coincide with their annual rally at the
end of the month.
The Heritage Centre is having an Easter Coffee Morning fundraiser on
Wednesday 12th April which will include a draw, tombola and competitions
for the children coinciding with school holidays.
April 20th will see the return of the Museum on the Move travelling exhibition
which has a theme this year of ‘communications’. The large
lorry containing the displays will be parked on the rear car park of
the Civic Centre from 10 until 4pm.
‘A Toast to St. George’ is the Heritage Centre’s tribute
in 2006 to St. George. The Patron Saint’s Day falls on Sunday 23rd
April and for 2 days – Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd samples of
locally produced cheese and wine will be on offer celebrating everything
that is great about English food. Throughout that week you will also
be able to purchase your ‘Red Rose’ buttonhole from the Heritage
Centre to support St. George’s Day.
The Heritage Centre continues to be available for school or party visits and these can be arranged during the day or out of hours and more information can be obtained on this by ringing 01948 665432.
The services offered by the Tourist Information Centre include accommodation
bookings and information on places to visit across the country. There
are now many 2006 brochures in stock and new ones coming in all the time.
Adjoining the Heritage Centre are the 4 retail craft units making up Whitchurch Craft Centre. Resident tenants include: Studio Too, a local artist producing and displaying paintings and other craft items; Mike Ralph Photography, offering studio work, framing and passport photographs; and Art.t., a unique craft boutique of jewellery, handbags, cards and many other accessories. There is currently one unit available to let and enquiries should be made to the Heritage Centre for anyone wanting to set up a small craft business.
