Local Information
WHITCHURCH people have always loved their sport and the town has facilities
for all major sporting activities, both indoor and outdoor. The town
is proud of the achievements of the rugby club, which regularly finds
itself rubbing shoulders with teams from much larger towns.
On the very edge of the town, Whitchurch has one of the region’s
best known championship golf courses at Hill Valley. This offers a first
class test of golf over two eighteen hole courses. The club has helped
to produce many high quality golfers, none more famous than Ian Woosnam,
who was a member at the club when he turned professional and went on
to become “US Masters Champion” and “World Matchplay
Champion” amongst his many other titles. 2006 will be an exciting
time at Hill Valley as it will see the opening of the new McDonalds Hotel
and Health Spa.
With other quality courses in the area such as Hawkstone Park, Portal,
Market Drayton and Llanymynech, it is no surprise that Whitchurch is
well known in golfing circles as an ideal base for golfing holidays.
The town is similarly well-known for other sporting activities such as fishing, at the renowned trout fishery, cycling, walking (the Shropshire and Cheshire Way paths). For the more adventurous there is the nationally famous Shropshire Rally School and the parachute centre.
